15 weeks!

What’s going on this week:

Your growing baby now measures about 4 inches long, crown to rump, and weighs in at about 2 1/2 ounces (about the size of an apple). She’s busy moving amniotic fluid through her nose and upper respiratory tract, which helps the primitive air sacs in her lungs begin to develop. Her legs are growing longer than her arms now, and she can move all of her joints and limbs. Although her eyelids are still fused shut, she can sense light. If you shine a flashlight at your tummy, for instance, she’s likely to move away from the beam. There’s not much for your baby to taste at this point, but she is forming taste buds. Finally, if you have an ultrasound this week, you may be able to find out whether your baby’s a boy or a girl! (Don’t be too disappointed if it remains a mystery, though. Nailing down your baby’s sex depends on the clarity of the picture and on your baby’s position. He or she may be modestly curled up or turned in such a way as to “hide the goods.”)

My Update:

Due Date: November 4, 2011 – 175 days to go!

Weight Gain: +5 lbs (from pre-preg weight).  The midwife said I’m right on track.  That was nice to hear.

Symptoms:  Nothing this week.

Cravings/Aversions: I still want fruit all the time.  Cold fruit, preferably!

Sleep: Still good, although my legs keep going to sleep, too…I think I need to start using a pillow between my knees to help support my hips.  Maybe that will make a difference.

I am loving: Uhhhh…fruit?

I miss:  Not much…

Movement: Not yet.

It’s a: I *still* think it’s a boy.  About 3 weeks till we can find out (if the baby cooperates.)

Exercise: Moving on!  Next category?

Diet: OK…pretty regular.  I’m mostly so tired and ‘done’ by the time I get home from work that we’ve been eating weird stuff, since I mostly don’t feel like cooking.  Scott was eating leftover pizza last night, so I ate a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats with almond milk, a sliced up tomato and  a few salt and vinegar potato chips.

Looking forward to: The anatomy scan ultrasound in a few weeks.  And also my birthday!

Belly Shot:

Huh. I look a little 'deer in the headlights' here.

Thursday Tidbits

In bullet form:

–  I researched online and found a prenatal yoga class (sort of nearby) that sounds good.  It’s on Tuesday nights, and since there’s no good TV on that night, I thought I should give it a go.  Wish me luck!

– My midwife appt on Tuesday was good.  All the normal checks (urine, weight, etc) were good – my blood pressure was high, but that seemed to maybe be a result of too many salty Chuy’s chips on Sunday night, and it was totally back to normal (110/71) when I checked it at home that night, so I’m calling it a fluke.  Scott went with me to this visit and we got to hear the heartbeat again…she had a much easier time finding it since my uterus is higher up now.  And she could even tell when the baby was moving and flipping around by the way it sounded.  Cool!  I measured right on schedule for about 15 weeks, and she said that 18 weeks was really the best time to get an ultrasound to find out the baby’s sex.  So, just a few more weeks!!

–  It’s raining here today.  I hardly know what to make of it, it’s been so long since we saw anything even resembling rain.  I took a picture from the front porch of my office to prove it.

There's even thunder and lightning!

-My birthday is in only 8 days.  I’ll be 33.  OLD.  I usually take my birthday off from work…I don’t think this year will be any different in that aspect.  I’ve already got lunch plans with my friend Kristi for that day, who is so very generously letting me borrow her pregnancy body pillow.  I can’t wait to try it out!

14 weeks!

What’s going on this week:

This week’s big developments: Your baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck his thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his facial muscles are getting a workout as his tiny features form one expression after another. His kidneys are producing urine, which he releases into the amniotic fluid around him — a process he’ll keep up until birth. He can grasp, too, and if you’re having an ultrasound now, you may even catch him sucking his thumb.

In other news: Your baby’s stretching out. From head to bottom, he measures 3 1/2 inches — (about the size of a lemon) — and he weighs 1 1/2 ounces. His body’s growing faster than his head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, his arms will have grown to a length that’s in proportion to the rest of his body. (His legs still have some lengthening to do.) He’s starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over his body. Your baby’s liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it’s doing its job right — and his spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can’t feel his tiny punches and kicks yet, your little pugilist’s hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.

My Update:

Due Date: November 4, 2011 – 182 days to go!

Weight Gain: +2.4 lbs (from pre-preg weight).  One of my books says I will likely gain about 4 lbs total this month.  We’ll see!

Symptoms:  Not much this week…more twinges and pulls and feelings that I am attributing to things stretching out and growing.

Cravings/Aversions:  None, really.  Food is sounding better and better, and I am back to more normal portion sizes.  I’m going to make an educated guess that this development will have some impact on the “weight gain” category from here on out.

Sleep: Good.  No complaints in this department!

I am loving: That my belly is starting to get harder.  And definitely more noticeable.  And how the ladies in my Pilates class have started touching it and are fawning over it.  🙂

I miss:  It seems that it’s every time we eat at Chuy’s that I notice that I really miss a good margarita.

Movement: Not yet.

It’s a: I *still* think it’s a boy.  Only about 5 or 6 more weeks till we can find out!  Ali and Mom…get your shopping shoes ready!

Exercise: Uhh…I’ve done a couple of workouts on the recumbent bike.  And Pilates.  Nothing else spectacular.

Diet: Better!  We ate all the Easter candy, so that’s done with.  Fruit is still sounding good all the time – especially fruit right out of the fridge so it’s nice and cold.  I’ve eaten more pineapple in the last few weeks, than probably ever in my life.

(New category I just made up.) Looking forward to: My midwife appt. on Tuesday.  I imagine it will be more of the same, (urine sample, talking and pushing around on my stomach) but I get to hear the heartbeat again, and that’s the mot exciting part!

One trimester down, 2 more to go!

So, I’m counting today (13w4d) as the official first day of my second trimester.  (40 weeks divided by 3, etc…)  It’s going pretty well, I must say!  Not much change from the 1st trimester, really, but that’s a good thing, since I’ve had such an easy time with this pregnancy so far.

I’ve started doing some registry research and making a list of things I think we’ll want to register for.  Mostly I’m waiting for Lisa to have the Bloob, so she can try out a lot of stuff that I know we are both interested in and give me her yay or nay votes on it all.  I’m using her as my own personal Consumer Reports.

We’re lucky, though, in that the room we are planning to use for the baby’s room, is already painted a nice bright yellow, so  check one thing off the list as ‘already done’.  We’re overachievers!  So, it only makes sense that the color scheme will be yellow, with some more gender-specific colors thrown in to pull it all together.  So maybe some yellow with brown and blue?  Or a little yellow with pink and green?    Or yellow with grey and white?   So many options!  Thankfully we’ve still got plenty of time to narrow it down.

I did make a purchase last week that was just too good to pass up…I knew I wanted some form of baby carrier, and the Ergo has such good reviews online and everyone seems to love it.  So when I saw that babysteals was offering it as the daily special for $57, I couldn’t resist!  Normally the Ergo Sport carrier is $115, so, yeah…SCORE!

It’s such a cute baby blue color, I won’t mind carting around a boy or a girl in it, especially knowing I got such a deal.  You can use this  carrier from newborn to toddlerhood, and it works as a front, back and even hip carrier with some small adjustments.  I’d like to try to put Madison in it for a test drive,  but, you know, I don’t want to get cat hair all over it.

13 weeks! (now with photo evidence)

What’s going on this week:

Fingerprints have formed on your baby’s tiny fingertips, her veins and organs are clearly visible through her still-thin skin, and her body is starting to catch up with her head — which makes up just a third of her body size now. If you’re having a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. Your baby is almost 3 inches long (the size of a medium shrimp) and weighs nearly an ounce.

My Update:

Due Date: November 4, 2011 – 189 days to go!

Weight Gain: About a pound.  Stupid Easter candy.

Symptoms:  I think I have have had my very first smell aversion.  I was washing dishes yesterday morning, and SOMEthing in the sink smelled so gross it kept making my gag reflex kick in, so mostly I washed dishes with my head turned to the side while breathing through my mouth.

Cravings/Aversions:  Still no specific cravings, but I go through phases where nothing really sounds good, and while I am eating something, I get bored of it really quickly.

Sleep: Still good, but more nighttime bathroom breaks now.

I am loving: How great I feel! (no change here!)

I miss:  Nothing specific this week.  I’m content.

Movement: Not yet.

It’s a: I *still* think it’s a boy. (Funny story…Scott posted our old upright stationery bike on Craigslist and some old-timer came to get it that same night.  Scott mentioned at one point that I was pregnant so we had gotten the recumbent bike, etc, and as he was leaving, the man said to Scott “Well, good luck with your new son.”   Coincidence?  I think not.)

Exercise: Yes!  I tried out the new bike and it’s great!  I did a 20 minute workout the other night to break it in.   I think I might do another one tonight.

Diet: Lacking this week…Too much Easter candy – not enough veggies.

The beans are spilled.

Things are kind of quiet around here…I think I’m coming off of an Easter sugar high, so I’m feeling very mellow. Everything seems to be progressing along as expected, and I think hope that in the next couple of weeks that my stomach will start to look less like I’ve been pounding down the cookies and more like I’ve got a baby growing in there.  I wore an outfit yesterday that seemed to make my small bump a little more noticeable, and as one of my co-workers told me today, “you won’t be able to hide THAT much longer!”

Speaking of not hiding things; yesterday the Great Facebook Announcement was made, which means that now the news is officially ‘out’ (except for my work).  Only 2 people at work have been told, but I think for everyone else, I’ll just let nature do its thing, and they’ll eventually figure it out on their own.  Most of my co-workers (and boss!) are in another state or overseas, so I can get away with not telling them for as long as I’d like, until the rumor mill starts, that is, which is always a possibility.

In other news, Scott found a really great Craigslist deal on a recumbent bike that we snagged last night!

We have talked about replacing our freebie stationery bike with a recumbent for a while, but now that I’m pregnant, the recumbent seems like a better idea all around, so he jumped on it.   It’s super quiet and smooth and I think I’ll do an introductory workout on it tonight.  (I bet it won’t chafe my thighs like the seat on the upright bike did.)

12 weeks!

What’s going on this week:

The most dramatic development this week: reflexes. Your baby’s fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. In fact, if you prod your abdomen, your baby will squirm in response, although you won’t be able to feel it. His intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into his abdominal cavity about now, and his kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder.

Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and in your baby’s brain, synapses are forming furiously. His face looks unquestionably human: His eyes have moved from the sides to the front of his head, and his ears are right where they should be. From crown to rump, your baby-to-be is just over 2 inches long (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce.

My Update:

Due Date: November 4, 2011 – 196 days to go!

Weight Gain: As of this morning, no pounds gained so far.

Symptoms: None, really, other than oily skin and not being able to eat very much in one sitting.

Cravings/Aversions: I’ll eat anything I normally would – In small amounts, that is!

Sleep: Yes, please.  Bedtime seems to be coming earlier and earlier.

I am loving: How great I feel!

I miss:  I’m surprised at how much I do miss drinking a beer or mixed drink when people around me are having one.  Now that it’s getting hot outside, it sounds so good!

Movement: Not yet.

It’s a: I think boy.

Exercise: Sadly, no.  Need to remedy that really soon, though.  (Still doing Pilates once a week, though, so that counts, right?)

Diet: Pretty good…fruit is about my favorite thing right now, so I’m taking in a lot of that.

Belly Shot:

So, here’s what happened.

Well, thankfully my family’s fertility is no joke.  The history seems to be, if you are a female in my family, you’re going to get pregnant, whether you really mean to….or not.  HA!

We got lucky on only our second month of trying.  Scott said he really felt like I was going to get pregnant the first month, but I didn’t think so.  And I wasn’t.  And then he said he totally didn’t think I was going to get pregnant the second month.  I didn’t think so either.  (pessimism, what?)  Things were gong along just like normal (read: not pregnant) and I suddenly got sick.  Real sick, like it started with a fever, and morphed into coughing and a runny nose, and by the end it felt like razors when I would swallow, and my ears were aching.  Just general misery.

I lasted at home for two and a half days, and on that Friday got up first thing and looked up the closest Urgent Care place and made a beeline for it.  They had a sign in there that said something along the lines of “if you have a bad cough, let someone know, in case it’s the flu”.  So, I told the lady at the desk and she made me wear one of those medical face masks so as not to infect the rest of the sick people in the waiting room.  (Well, and to not infect her, either, I guess.  She probably wasn’t sick.)  So, the doctor checked me out and told me he would give me some antibiotics and some decongestants, etc, and I mentioned that there was a chance I could be pregnant, but it was sort of too early in the cycle to take a test, so I wasn’t sure, but didn’t know if I could take those drugs if I was.  He had me take a test and said, ‘if it’s negative, no problem!’

It was negative, so I took myself immediately to get relief from the pharmacy, and also a pint of ice cream. (The Dr. suggested it for my throat!) The next day I already felt tons better, and was looking forward to the fact that Monday was a work holiday and I got to stay home anyhow.  Well, Monday came and I noticed that my skin was doing this weird thing…it was….NOT breaking out.  And my period was only supposed to be about 4 days away, so that was unusual.  I had a couple of cheap pregnancy tests in the bathroom, and I figured, why not?

So I took one…and while I waited for the result, I got ready to go pick up Madison from the vet, where she had just had her teeth cleaned.   And I went back to look, there was a definite plus sign!

WHOA.

And then to verify a while later:

We’re having a baby!

By Popular Demand…

So here it is! Now you all can follow along at home. It’ll be just like being here in person, I swear! I’m still figuring out what I’m doing and how to get everything all set up on this here blog, so if you come to check for a post and things look weird…well, that means I’m hard at work to make it better.

I’ve also decided that I will record how far along I am at the bottom of each post, so when I want to go back and re-read things, I’ll be able to pinpoint it exactly.

You’ll notice up at the top, that so far, I’ve got 2 pages – the front page and probably the more popular page – the one with all the belly pics! I’ll keep adding to the belly pic page each week with a new picture for your viewing pleasure.
